In the Ukraine region of Dnipro, a 38-year-old man named Alexander drowned after jumping into the ice cold water of the Chortomlyk River.
The man jumped through a hole that a friend of his had drilled into the frozen river with a chainsaw as his wife filmed him. Before he jumped, she expressed worry. The reported air temperature was -5°C (23°F). After he vanished through the hole into the Chortomlyk River, video footage shows the bystanders patiently waiting for him to emerge.
At 46 seconds into the footage, a knocking sound becomes audible. It appears to be the man’s head bumping against the ice from beneath. Further into the video, a bystander tries to drill into the frozen river bed using the chainsaw to try to retrieve Alexander, as Alexander’s wife asks in distress for someone to call for rescue. Emergency workers arrived and dove into the water to search for Alexander.
It is reported that Alexander has been carried away by the current beneath the ice.
Alexander’s body was discovered the following day by rescue workers at a depth of around 4 meters (13.1 ft).
