Taking The Confusion Out Of Gold Jewellery

Submitted by: John Phillipson

If you’re like I was when I first began looking at gold jewellery, you may be getting very confused by the prolific terminologies that make no sense to the new jewellery buyer. Tennis chains, Belcher chains, Figaro chains…what does it all mean, and how do you choose the style that you will love?

In this article I’ll attempt to remove some of the mystery of this topic, to give you an educated means of find the perfect gold jewellery for you. Following are six common styles of chain with descriptions of their appearance, and even some quirky history facts!

1. Anchor Style: As you may have guessed, the anchor chain bears similarities to the chains on ships used to hold the anchor. There are two possible options of linking for the anchor style chain the oval links may be a normal chain style, or, when laid flat, they may interlock. A variation of this style is the Mariner, which contains a bar through the middle of the link.

2. Belcher Style: The belcher chain is a variation on your typical link chain. Normally the links are round in shape, but this can vary. The belcher style link is wider than it is thick.

3. Curb Style: The curb style chain comes in a variety of link sizes, ranging from a few millimetres to a few centimetres. When laid flat, the links always interlock.

4. Figaro Style: This elegant chain is different to your typical chains. Three small links, followed by one elongated link, make up the pattern for this chain, giving variety and interest.

5. Snake Style: Looking more like a cord than a chain, due to very tight links, this chain’s form is either round or square, with the links creating a snaky zigzag look.

6. Tennis Style: The history of the tennis bracelet is fascinating. A professional tennis player, Chris Evert, played in the 1987 US Open, during which her bracelet broke. Requesting the game to be paused, she proceeded to look for her expensive bracelet. Her style of bracelet, with diamonds in individual settings, then became known as the tennis bracelet. This particular style of gold jewellery is comfortable to wear due to the easy moving chain. Famous tennis stars such as Serena Williams, among others, still wear this style of bracelet.

There are many more styles of chains out there, but hopefully this will give you a start and help you determine what exactly it is you are looking for in a perfect gold bracelet or necklace.

Finding that perfect gold jewellery for a friend or relative isn’t that hard; however it can be confusing at first to wade through the many different types of jewellery on offer in trying to determine exactly what is right for you. Take your time, do the research, and eventually you will come up with the perfect item. Gold jewellery of any form is highly personal, so it’s important to try to get it right.

Happy jewellery browsing!
